May 2020 Writing Process

I READ THAT IN HIS VOICE

Per my new schedule, today's post is about my present writing process. (Can I just take a moment to say, I really enjoy having a schedule?)  I think I have a fairly average writing routine. I did start back to work, so there's not as much writing happening at the moment. However, I'm during what I can to meet my monthly goal (5k words).

Work. Write. Read.
From "Advice" in "Writing Help"

So on an average day, I start writing after lunch or after my "real job". I grab my chromebook and head to wherever is convenient. Right now, that's usually the family room couch. I begin by checking my email and other online stuff.

Once that's out of the way, I fire up Google docs and open the document titled "TDS2, Rewrite". This, of course, is The Dragon's Skin (as opposed to TDS1, The Dragons' Stones). I usually scroll Pinterest or find something on Youtube as it loads. Both Youtube and Pinterest will stay open as I write.

With whatever I chose on Youtube playing through my earbuds, I start writing. I reread the last paragraph or two, trying to pick up yesterday's threads. Then I put my fingers on the keyboard and start writing. Now any writer will tell you, that's easier said than done.

I mentioned earlier that I leave Pinterest and Youtube open as I write. These are two distraction I allow myself. Why? Because they give me places to go when the words don't work. Would I get more words out if I closed their tabs? Maybe, but I think those words would be a lower quality.

I generally try to write 300 words a session. It doesn't always happen, and some days I try to write more. Right now, I get two, maybe three, writing days a week; so I'm aiming for more a lot.

Presently, another major distraction is my kitten Onyx. She's almost doubled in size since we found her, and her energy is off the chart! So yeah, she's distracting, but honestly, I don't mind at all. Watching her go from shy, abandoned, and underweight to bold, loved, and healthy has been just great. (Even if she is trying to eat my toes at the moment.)

So that's what writing looks like right now. I'll using this post as my base for future writing process updates, and we'll see how things vary or stay the same.

  1. That actually sounds so fun, Moriah!! I actually used to do something rather similar, but for a different purpose; I would turn on Pandora and put it on my "Film Score" station, and then I would write a poem to "tell the story" of whatever song came up. I was SO FUN! Because music, especially film score music, always tells a story. I actually really miss doing that... Need to do it again...

Oh, by the way, I nominated you for the Real Neat Blogger Award! You can read the post and see the stuff that you can [but don't have to] do. :) https://nightingale2018.wordpress.com/2020/05/11/ive-been-nominated-for-the-real-neat-blogger-award-my-answers-to-the-award-questions/
