June 2020 Writing Process

Image
From "Advice" in "Writing Help" This is absolutely true of me. How about you? As y'all know, I'm prepping for the editing process of The Dragon's Skin . My goal, as set in  this post , is to comment on Chapters 3 - 15. At the moment, I'm halfway through Chapter 7, which is good. However, I'm going through some changes at my "real job", and I'll be working more than ever. So... we'll see.... From "The Dragon Books" Presently, I don't have a lot of time to write. I'm continuing to track my progress with my bullet journal, but instead of a word count, I'm tracking how much time I spend commenting. I'm hoping this will lead to me feeling like I'm actually working. More than that, I'm working to keep creating as my work life shifts. So right now, I'm trying to dive straight into my book and to cut out all the distractions I can. Which means no Pinterest and no Youtube - as much as possible. From ...

May 2020 Writing Process

Image
From "Writer's Life" in "Writing Help" Per  my new schedule , today's post is about my present writing process. (Can I just take a moment to say, I really enjoy having a schedule?)  I think I have a fairly average writing routine. I did start back to work, so there's not as much writing happening at the moment. However, I'm during what I can to meet my monthly goal (5k words). From "Advice" in "Writing Help" So on an average day, I start writing after lunch or after my "real job". I grab my chromebook and head to wherever is convenient. Right now, that's usually the family room couch. I begin by checking my email and other online stuff. Once that's out of the way, I fire up Google docs and open the document titled "TDS2, Rewrite". This, of course, is The Dragon's Skin  (as opposed to TDS1, The Dragons' Stones ). I usually scroll Pinterest or find something on Youtube as it loads. Both Youtube an...

Teaser Tuesday, May 2020 ~ THE DRAGON'S SKIN

Image
From "Books, Movies, Coffee, Etc" I'm hoping that this snippet from The Dragon's Skin  can maybe be a part of such a moment for you. Personally, rainy nights are my favorite time to edit a WIP. Something about the rhythm of raindrops just finds its way into my words. (It's a weird writer thing, I guess.) Today, according to my  new schedule , is a #TeaserTuesday. So let's look at a teaser!! A little context: This is narrated from Ciara's point of view, and she just learned some... interesting informaton. From "The Dragon Books" What had happened? How had everything gone wrong so quickly? Aleksander was back. It was supposed to be wonderful. It wasn’t. I sucked air in, and my chest heaved. I couldn’t breathe. I’d lost him. I’d lost Aleksander. My hands covered my eyes, my cheeks, my mouth. What had happened? Aleksander, who were you? I didn’t know anymore, and it shook everything. My heart tightened, too small for this. Tears fell from my face, bu...

Top Bullet Journal Supplies to Boost Creativity

Image
A weekly spread From "Bullet Journal Inspiration" I've meant to post everyday this week, but whenever I sit down at my laptop, I need up writing instead. I am here today, however, so let's get started. A monthly spread From "Bullet Journal Inspiration" By this point, I'm just going to assume that everyone knows I keep a bullet journal. It's an easy, customizable planner, generally done on dot gird paper. I'm almost through my first one and am eagerly looking forward to setting up my second one. The basic supplies for bullet journal are the journal itself and a pen. That's it. So it's relatively inexpensive to get started. However, once you get started, it's hard to stop. (Trust me, I have a whole box full of writing utensils.) MORIAH'S TOP BULLET JOURNAL SUPPLIES TO BOOST CREATIVITY: Washi Tape:  No shame, I love washi tape. It comes in colors; it comes in designs. It's easy t...

Writing for Fun

Image
From "The Craziness of Moriah Snell" So did you google it? Dd you? Google it!!! Google it; I'll wait. .... Isn't that the greatest thing?!?! From "The Craziness of Moriah Snell" Anywhoo.... So... I'm taking a break from The Dragon's Skin . I love it. It's wonderful, but it's hard. I'm struggling a lot with it though. for whatever reason, this sequel is harder than it predecessor. But I'm still writing. I've started another WIP, but I'm not going to tell y'all about it. Why? Because I want this WIP to simply be fun. That's important to me. Maybe it's one of my weird writer things. Maybe I'm delusional, but having this WIP is really helping me. See, this WIP has no pressure. I don't have to make it work. The characters can be a mess; the plot can be full of holes. I LOVE IT!! And because of that freedom, the rest of my writing has eased. I already have fresh ideas ...

Bullet Journaling for Writers

Image
From "The Craziness of Moriah Snell" Okay, can we all just take a minute to appreciate the truth of this? Raise your hand if you've ever bought any of the things listed above, thinking "now I can get organized". Personally, my hand is way up. From "Life Truths" But my bullet journal makes it easier. I bought my bullet journal (or bujo) about eight months ago, I think. I admit, I didn't really know much about them at the time. At first, it was mostly to-do lists and that kind of thing. But in October, I watched a few videos on how others use their bujos. Now mine is one of the greatest things in my day-to-day life as a writer. From "Bullet Journal Inspiration" So the core of most bujos is the monthly spread - basically a calendar that tracks that month's events and responsibilities. How do I use that as a writer? When I set up my monthly spread, I purposely include days for writing and days for platform ...

What's Up in January, 2020

Image
From "The Craziness of Me" If this doesn't make sense to you, I have five books you need to read. 'Cause. . . . From "My Love Language" Cumberbatch knows what's up.  From "The Craziness of Me" Anywhooo..!!! 2020 is offically underway. Already, it's shaping up to be a killer year, full of changes and growth. For anyone who didn't read the post:  Hello, 2020 , my word of 2020 is "Renewal". I'm hoping and praying for positive changes all this year. Reading   in   2020: So part of that is (of course) my reading and writing. As I've had to adult more, my reading has slipped. Thus, my book intake has dropped, and that is sadness. I'm combating that in a couple ways. The site  Goodreads  is one of them. Goodreads is basically a tracker of how many books you read. It also allows you to set a goal for the year, telling you when you're behind or ahead. The site offers suggested books th...

5 Writer Things I Do

Image
From My Lifeblood ~ Writing I firmly believe this. I have no idea who John Gardner is, but he is a hundred percent correct. If I wasn't a crazy dreamer, I wouldn't write. I would have chosen some other, more stable career. But here I am - crazy as anything and writing all my books. From My Lifeblood ~ Writing Now as a writer, I realize that a lot more than just words goes into my writing process. Some of them are kind of obvious, such as my worldview and the books/movies I enjoy. Some, however, are bit more unusual. For today's post, I'm just rounding up some of the ones I've come to recognize. I hope to update this train of thought as I spot more and to encourage y'all to discover weird writer things in your own lives. I Date Everything:  And when I say everything , I mean EVERYTHING . From bullet journal entries to story ideas, I write the date for just about anything I do. This partly for copyright purposes and partly for my o...
